2018 Mount Mary Réflexion Pinot Noir
The Mount Mary you most likely haven’t heard of! Vineyards are constantly renewing and replacing vine material to ensure that every plant is contributing specifically to the exacting quality and unmistakable character of their intended wines.
Every drop of juice that makes the blend must justify its presence by fitting the profile of the vineyard in a given year. This means, inevitably, that some components – given the same degree of love and attention from shoot to wine – will miss the cut. The best of this fine juice at Mount Mary may become a Réflexion wine. Not made every year this “declassified” Mount Mary is a perfect way to entwine yourself with the Mount Mary aura for a fraction of the price.
This declassified Mount Mary Pinot was released yesterday. Hence no reviews of yet, trust me – there won’t be any left when the reviews hit the interweb. It is so new it hasn’t left the winery, it should hit our cellars in 2 to 3 weeks.

Tasting Note
The 2018 Réflexion Pinot spent 18 months maturing in barrel, a little longer than is typical of Mount Mary Pinot Noir nowadays. The hope was this wine would build a touch more power and concentration with an extended period in oak. It’s a fine-boned wine of pure Pinot expression. The nose opens with cherry, just ripe raspberry, quintessential Mount Mary Pinot quince and cinnamon to add a touch of spice to the aroma profile.
The palate is elegant and light-bodied, with just enough concentration and flesh. It has developed an extra layer of secondary complexity in place of overt primary fruit due to the extended time spent ageing in barrel. A food-friendly style that is likely to continue to evolve over the next 2-5 years. Sam Middleton, Mount Mary

2017 Mount Mary Quintet $145 per bottle
“Mount Mary has hit a purple patch with their Quintet over the past few vintages, and their Royal Purpleness continues in 2017. Such perfume. It’s head spinningly fragrant. I’m thinking violet, cigar box, nougat, spicy biscuits, mint, chocolate and sweet wet earth, along with a core of intense raspberry, cherry and blackcurrant. It’s medium bodied, lithe but dense, rich cherry chocolate sprinkled with baking spices, crisp cranberry acidity, high pixel tannin, sweetness of fruit with a savoury ferrous edge. The finish is supremely long, all graphite and perfume, crisp definition and aniseed trailing in the aftertaste. Fine and rare.” 97 Points Gary Walsh.
