2018 Mount Mary Marli Russell RP1 & RP2

Here is another relatively unknown wine from one of the best wineries (Halliday Winery of the Year 2018) in the country – Mount Mary with their new release 2018 Marli Russell RP1 & RP2.

So what is Mount Mary Marli Russell RP1 & RP2?

Marli Middleton (nee Russell), co-founder of Mount Mary, was the inspiration behind the label in recognition of her enthusiasm for the family to continue the pursuit of new ideas.

In 2008, in response to changing environmental conditions, the Mount Mary team began to establish additional vineyard areas at Mount Mary with the desire to evaluate new varieties.

They chose seven Rhone varieties with the vision to continue to explore their potential on their unique site. The varieties planted include three white grapes, Marsanne, Roussanne and Clairette and four red grapes, Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre and Cinsault.

As Masters of the Bordeaux and Burgundy varieties and turning their attention to Rhône  – these wines are aptly named “Rhone Project 1 (White) and Rhone Project 2 (Red)”.

Marsanne 45%, Roussanne 45% and Clairette 10%.

“These Marli Russell wines are interesting because even though they use Rhone grape varieties, they still come over as being very Mount Mary, not contrary. Tasted alongside the 2017, and that wine is a bit leaner and tighter, but not as textural and interesting as this 2018. The 2018 also seems a bit longer.

Quince, lime, almond, a slight flinty/smoky note, honey and flowers. It’s tight, and focussed, the fine chalky texture very appealing, delivers crunch and lime/green apple flavour, and finishes long and firm, with an almost quinine bitterness (as a positive, of course) and melon rind. Feels like it will go very well with bottle age”. 94+ Points Gary Walsh

55% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 20% Shiraz, 5% Cinsault

“Ripe strawberry, raspberry, dried roses and herbs, redcurrant and rosehip jelly. Medium-bodied, but has impact, the quality of the tannin moving up a notch this vintage, offset with cool limped acidity, succulent flavour, and a long finish shaped up with chalk dust tannin. A very strong release here. A pleasure to drink.” 95 points Gary Walsh
